This article shows you how to set up and use the openSUSE Leap 15 (15.4) Linux distribution in a new virtual machine using VMware Workstation 17 Pro installed on a computer.
The openSUSE Linux distribution is widely used in server systems in terms of performance. The openSUSE Leap system, used without a desktop environment on a server that serves important tasks, has an essential place in terms of security and performance.
Both expert and home users can prefer the openSUSE operating system supported by the SUSE company.
Before you install and experience the openSUSE distribution on your physical computer, you can run it virtually with VMware Workstation virtual machine software and install it on a real computer after gaining experience.
You can follow this video tutorial or the steps below to install and configure the SUSE system on the virtual computer.
Step 1: First, visit https://www.opensuse.org/ to download the openSUSE ISO file and download the image of the Leap version to your PC.
Step 2: Open the VMware Workstation 17 Pro virtualization software installed on your PC and choose to create a new virtual machine.
Step 3: Continue with Custom (Advanced) in the open wizard. And change the hardware version to 17.x or leave it.
Step 4: Install the operating system later and set the guest system type to Linux / openSUSE 64 Bit.
Step 5: Configure the virtual machine name as your selected system name and set the installation location.
Step 6: Set a value in the processor configuration that matches the performance of your actual computer.
Step 7: Configure the virtual RAM size for your virtual system. For example, with the full option, you can specify the size your system can use.
Step 8: Select NAT as the network type, LSI Logic for I/O Controller, and virtual disk type as NVMe.
Step 9: To install openSUSE on a clean disk, choose to create a new virtual disk and increase the disk size. Continue without changing the name and location of the disk file.
Step 10: At the last step of the wizard, click Customize Hardware, tick the virtualization properties from the settings of the processor device, and then click on the CD/DVD device to add the openSUSE ISO file you downloaded.
Step 11: Select 3.x from the USB settings, enable graphics acceleration, and configure the graphics memory according to your PC’s GPU.
Step 12: Close the virtual machine wizard and run the openSUSE guest machine.
Step 13: When your virtual PC starts, press Enter on Installation in the openSUSE boot menu and install your system by following the steps in the video tutorial.
